How were insects once used in the diagnosis of a serious disease?

Clue: Ants were used in the diagnosis of diabetes.

Answer:
If ants gathered around the place where a person had urinated, it was a strong indication that person had diabetes.  The ants were attracted by the sugar in the urine.
