A man went to work one day and by the end of his day's work he was one inch shorter.  Why?

Clue: The man was fit and healthy, as this was required for his physically demanding job.

Clue:  Nothing was cut off the man, he became an inch shorter as aa result of an incident at work.

Yes it is true.  Here is the last clue.  He was subject to enormous forces.
